What is the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund?

After the 9/11 attacks, many Americans developed cancer and respiratory illnesses from the toxic fumes and debris, which contained asbestos, lead, dioxins, and benzene. To support those affected, the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund was established in 2001, and later expanded by the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act in 2011, creating the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP) to address related illnesses and injuries. The fund was extended to 2090 by the Never Forget the Heroes Act in 2019. The WTCHP offers free, lifetime medical care to those exposed, while the VCF provides financial aid to individuals who were injured, diagnosed with related illnesses, or lost loved ones due to 9/11-related conditions. Nearly 500,000 people inhaled the toxic debris, making them potentially eligible for these programs, which, despite serving different purposes, offer significant financial and medical benefits based on eligibility and exposure.

9/11 Caused Many People To Develop Cancer

Over the past 20 years, the federal 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) has distributed more than $9.89 billion in claims to first responders, volunteers, residents, students, and survivors, including payments on behalf of family members and personal representatives of those who died from 9/11-related conditions.

According to epidemiological research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and recent scientific data, the 9/11 population remains at a significantly increased risk of developing 68 different diseases and illnesses decades after the tragic events.

Researchers from Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine report that thousands have been diagnosed with cancer or respiratory illnesses linked to the 9/11 attack, with many more having passed away from these conditions. A long-term study also found that cancer diagnoses among New York City police officers were 50% higher after 9/11 than before.

Each year, numerous individuals continue to be diagnosed with World Trade Center (WTC)-certified cancers, including mesothelioma, skin cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, lung cancer, and others, due to prolonged latency periods.

If you were present at the World Trade Center, the surrounding New York City Exposure Zone, the Pentagon crash site, or the Shanksville, Pennsylvania crash site on 9/11 or at any time in the following eight months, you might be eligible for financial compensation from the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund.

9/11 Exposure Zone Compensation Lawsuit

As of March 2023, there have been no major settlements awarded by the courts specifically for 9/11-related health cases. While awaiting court decisions on potential compensation, the U.S. government has established compensation programs for those affected by the 9/11 attacks.

In 2011, the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was enacted, providing health benefits and compensation to first responders, survivors, and their families exposed to toxins at Ground Zero and surrounding areas. This program covers various medical conditions, including respiratory diseases, cancers, and other serious health issues. Eligible individuals can receive healthcare and compensation through the World Trade Center Health Program and the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF).

It’s crucial to stay informed, as the situation may have evolved since this information was published. Always consult current sources for the latest details on 9/11 health-related settlements and compensation programs.
